Wine Store Tasting: Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir

I went to a free wine tasting at the Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. This review is on two of my favorite wines I tried.
** I was unable to get a picture of myself holding the wines, for the store was too busy **

Tasting: House of the Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon

Name: House of the Dragon Carbernet Sauvignon
Variety: Blend of Cabernet and Sauvignon
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2020
Price: $17

Winery review: After a bit of sniffing, I determined the cabernet sauvignon (the red label), seemed lighter than the blend, so that was next up. Like the pinot, the delightfully dark cab’s “legs” slowly rolled down the inside of the glass after swirling. Unlike the pinot, which didn’t have a strong smell, the scent of this wine hit my nose before I’d tipped the glass to have a sip. Bonus: The cork had a dragon’s tail swirled around it.

The first sip was startlingly fruity and sweet for a cab. There was also a surprising lack of tannins. It wasn’t my favorite wine, although I may have enjoyed it more if I’d had something super savory to pair it with, like a steak or a roast duck. - Elite Daily

Wine Folly: pg 200 Cabernet Sauvignon in general - I got the black cherry nodes and bitter fruit flavors. I couldn't make out any specific scents, for this was my first tasting. Also, I didn't decant the 3 hours the bottle recommended, which would have helped the flavors become less bitter.

My review: I first took a sip before waiting the hours to decant, and I found it too bitter and sour. I disliked it at first but decided to stay as instructed. Once I tried it again, I really enjoyed the deep berry flavors, and I could finally enjoy the wine.

I tasted this with no food.

Welcome To My Wine Blog!

 Hello All!

Welcome to my wine blog! I'm starting this as an assignment for a wine course I'm taking.

I am 22 and currently only have a little experience with wine. I have had my fair share of cheap wine from the grocery store, but only for drinking purposes rather than experiencing the wine. As of right now, I only know a little about the types of wine, for I only look for the cheapest wines I can. I also don't quite understand the lingo, so forgive my naivety throughout this first post.

With the very few wines I have tried, I have come to learn that I enjoy white wines more than red, and I would prefer sweet over dry. Something that I do know I enjoy is fruit wines, such as Moscato. Though, as I've said before, I have very little experience with anything wine, so my preferences are subject to change throughout this semester of wine learning.

My family is very big on wine; my parents are loyalty members at multiple different wineries. Because I have very little experience with wine, my hope with this course is that I come out able to converse with my family about the different types of wine they drink and enjoy. I feel that having a strong amount of knowledge of wine and its lingo is a huge power move, especially when conversing with people older than you.

Throughout this blog, I will hopefully be trying many different types of wines as well as wine pairings. I enjoy a good charcuterie board, and I have been informed that pairing the right wine with certain foods can enhance the experience tremendously. I have often just taken the cheapest fruit wine I can find for my charcuterie nights, and I've noticed the pairing to be very tasteful. I am looking forward to being able to choose the right types of wine with the right types of cheese and enjoying the tasty pairing.

I'm excited to see where this course takes me, and what wine knowledge I'll be leaving with.
